Map of the Ottoman Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Ottoman Empire appears from 1326 to 1922. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1879: about 6.8 million km² across 165 provinces.

The Ottoman Empire grew from a small Turkish principality in northwestern Anatolia founded by Osman I around 1300. It took Constantinople in 1453, and at its height under Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century it ruled southeastern Europe, the Middle East and most of North Africa. After defeat in the First World War the sultanate was abolished in 1922, and the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed in 1923.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
