Map of the Mughal Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Mughal Empire appears from 1526 to 1857. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1688: about 2.4 million km² across 86 provinces.

The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur, a descendant of Timur, after his victory at Panipat in 1526. Under Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb it ruled most of the Indian subcontinent, and its builders created the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort in Delhi. After Aurangzeb's death in 1707 its power shrank, and the British deposed the last emperor after the rebellion of 1857.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
