Map of the Qing dynasty

On the Geographic History map, the Qing dynasty appears from 1637 to 1912. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1851: about 12 million km² across 185 provinces.

The Qing dynasty was founded by the Manchus, who proclaimed it in 1636 and took Beijing in 1644. Under the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors it greatly expanded China's borders, bringing Taiwan, Mongolia, Xinjiang and Tibet under its rule. Weakened by the Opium Wars and the Taiping Rebellion, it fell in the revolution of 1911, and the last emperor, Puyi, abdicated in 1912.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
