Map of the Khmer Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Khmer Empire appears from AD 803 to 1431. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 881: about 870 thousand km² across 30 provinces.

The Khmer Empire dates from around 802, when Jayavarman II proclaimed himself universal monarch, and it ruled much of mainland Southeast Asia from its capital at Angkor. Its kings built Angkor Wat in the 12th century and Angkor Thom soon after, sustained by vast reservoirs and canals. It declined in the 14th century, and Angkor was abandoned as the capital after a Siamese attack around 1431.

The source dataset also uses this name outside AD 802 - 1431; this page counts only AD 802 - 1431.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
