Map of the Tang dynasty

On the Geographic History map, the Tang dynasty appears from AD 619 to AD 907. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 669: about 4.9 million km² across 120 provinces.

The Tang dynasty ruled China from 618 to 907, with its capital at Chang'an, then one of the largest cities in the world. Its armies reached deep into Central Asia, and its age is remembered as a high point of Chinese poetry, with Li Bai and Du Fu, and of trade along the Silk Road. The An Lushan rebellion of 755-763 weakened it badly, and the dynasty ended in 907.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
