Map of the Timurid Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Timurid Empire appears from 1371 to 1526. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1401: about 3.1 million km² across 70 provinces.

The Timurid Empire was built by Timur (Tamerlane), a Turco-Mongol conqueror who took power in Samarkand in 1370 and campaigned from Delhi to Anatolia. His descendants ruled Iran and Central Asia, and their courts in Samarkand and Herat were centres of Persian art, science and architecture, including Ulugh Beg's observatory. By the early 16th century the Uzbeks and the Safavids had taken their lands, and Timur's descendant Babur went on to found the Mughal Empire in India.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
