Map of the Roman Republic

On the Geographic History map, the Roman Republic appears from 467 BC to 27 BC. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 44 BC: about 2.7 million km² across 179 provinces.

By tradition the Roman Republic was founded in 509 BC, when the last king of Rome was expelled, and it was governed by elected magistrates led by two consuls, together with the Senate. Over five centuries it conquered Italy, defeated Carthage and spread across the Mediterranean. Civil wars in the 1st century BC brought it down, and in 27 BC Octavian became Augustus, the first emperor.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
