Map of the Han dynasty

On the Geographic History map, the Han dynasty appears from 202 BC to AD 220. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 61: about 4.1 million km² across 110 provinces.

The Han dynasty ruled China from 202 BC to AD 220, with a short break under Wang Mang's Xin dynasty (AD 9-23). It pushed into Central Asia, Korea and Vietnam, opened the Silk Road to the west, and made Confucian teaching the basis of government. China's majority ethnic group still calls itself the Han after this dynasty.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
