Map of the Kingdom of the Franks

On the Geographic History map, the Kingdom of the Franks appears from AD 481 to AD 840. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 815: about 1 million km² across 128 provinces.

The Frankish kingdom was united by Clovis I, who became king around 481 and converted to Christianity. Under the Merovingian and then the Carolingian kings it grew into the leading power of western Europe, and Charlemagne was crowned emperor in Rome in 800. In 843 the Treaty of Verdun divided it among his grandsons, laying the foundations of France and Germany.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
