Map of Carthage

On the Geographic History map, Carthage appears from 467 BC to 146 BC. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 213 BC: about 640 thousand km² across 30 provinces.

Carthage was founded by Phoenician settlers from Tyre on the coast of modern Tunisia, by tradition in 814 BC. It built a trading empire across North Africa, southern Spain, Sardinia and western Sicily, and fought Rome in the three Punic Wars, including Hannibal's march over the Alps. Rome destroyed the city in 146 BC.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
