Map of the Maurya Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Maurya Empire appears from 322 BC to 185 BC. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 187 BC: about 3.5 million km² across 127 provinces.

Chandragupta Maurya founded the Maurya Empire around 322 BC, with its capital at Pataliputra, and under his grandson Ashoka it covered almost all of the Indian subcontinent. After the bloody conquest of Kalinga, Ashoka turned to Buddhism and had his edicts carved on rocks and pillars across the empire. The dynasty ended in 185 BC, when the general Pushyamitra Shunga killed the last Mauryan king.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
