Map of the Gupta Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Gupta Empire appears from AD 321 to AD 600. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 406: about 1.7 million km² across 65 provinces.

The Gupta Empire, founded by Chandragupta I around 320, ruled much of northern India until the 6th century. Its era is often called the classical age of India: the time of the poet Kalidasa, the mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata, and the cave paintings of Ajanta. Invasions by the Huna and the rise of regional dynasties broke it apart.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
