Map of the Western Roman Empire

On the Geographic History map, the Western Roman Empire appears from AD 395 to AD 480. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 396: about 2.5 million km² across 200 provinces.

The Western Roman Empire was the western half of the Roman Empire, ruled separately after 395, first from Milan and then from Ravenna. Through the 5th century it lost Britain, Spain, Gaul and Africa to Germanic peoples such as the Visigoths, Vandals and Franks, and Rome itself was sacked in 410 and 455. In 476 Odoacer deposed the last emperor in Italy, Romulus Augustulus.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
