Map of Kievan Rus
On the Geographic History map, Kievan Rus appears from AD 861 to 1054. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1001: about 1 million km² across 38 provinces.
Kievan Rus was a federation of East Slavic lands ruled by the Rurikid dynasty, with Kiev as its main centre from the late 9th century. Vladimir the Great adopted Orthodox Christianity from Byzantium in 988, and under Yaroslav the Wise it was one of the largest states in Europe. After Yaroslav's death in 1054 it broke into rival principalities, and the Mongol invasion of 1237-1240 ended it.

About this map
Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
