Map of Austria-Hungary

On the Geographic History map, Austria-Hungary appears from 1867 to 1917. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1917: about 810 thousand km² across 50 provinces.

Austria-Hungary was created by the Compromise of 1867, which turned the Austrian Empire into a dual monarchy of Austria and Hungary under the Habsburg emperor Franz Joseph. It was home to Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Ukrainians, Croats, Serbs, Romanians, Italians and others. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 led it into the First World War, and it broke apart at the war's end in 1918.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
