Map of the Rashidun Caliphate

On the Geographic History map, the Rashidun Caliphate appears from AD 623 to AD 661. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 653: about 6.5 million km² across 154 provinces.

The Rashidun Caliphate was the state led by the first four caliphs after the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali. In less than thirty years Arab armies conquered Syria, Egypt, Iraq and most of the Sasanian Empire. The First Fitna, a civil war, ended it in 661, when Muawiya founded the Umayyad Caliphate.

About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
