Source page: https://geographichistory.app/empire/umayyad-caliphate/

On the Geographic History map, the Umayyad Caliphate appears from AD 662 to AD 750. It reaches its largest mapped extent in AD 741: about 8.5 million km² across 234 provinces.

The Umayyad Caliphate ruled from Damascus from 661 to 750 and became one of the largest empires in history, reaching from Spain and Morocco to Central Asia and the Indus. It made Arabic the language of government and built the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The Abbasid revolution overthrew it in 750, but a surviving Umayyad prince went on to found the Emirate of Cordoba in Spain.

## About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
