Source page: https://geographichistory.app/empire/ilkhanate/

On the Geographic History map, the Ilkhanate appears from 1259 to 1335. It reaches its largest mapped extent in 1261: about 3.5 million km² across 83 provinces.

The Ilkhanate was the Mongol khanate in Iran founded by Hulagu, a grandson of Genghis Khan, who sacked Baghdad in 1258. It ruled Iran, Iraq, the Caucasus and much of Anatolia, and its ruler Ghazan converted to Islam in 1295, after which Persian culture and historical writing flourished at its court. It fell apart after Abu Said died without an heir in 1335.

## About this map

Territory comes from the Chronas historical dataset used by the Geographic History app. Areas are approximate, computed from about 2,400 province shapes, and describe this map rather than official historical figures - border data for the ancient and medieval world is necessarily a reconstruction.
